What we check before an attorney can join
- Bar licenseWe look up the attorney's bar number on the official website of the state bar or court that licensed them, and confirm that the license is active and in good standing.
- IdentityWe confirm who the attorney is: their name, law firm and contact details, matched against the official bar record.
- ApprovalOnly after both checks does an attorney get access to cases. Until then, they cannot see any applicant's file.
Why the license state matters less than you think
Immigration law is federal. An attorney licensed in any U.S. state, Washington D.C. or a U.S. territory can represent you before USCIS and the immigration courts everywhere in the country. What matters is that the license is active and in good standing in the jurisdiction that issued it, and that is what we check.
If you have a problem with your attorney
- Your agreement for legal services is directly between you and your attorney. MyUSVisa is not a party to it and is not involved in the attorney–client relationship.
- If you have a concern about your attorney's conduct or legal work, file a complaint with the state bar or court that licensed them. It is the body that can investigate and discipline lawyers. The links for every jurisdiction are below.
